In liberal democracies such as ours, educational establishments have become small-scale models of society where children, adolescents and young people, apart from receiving formal academic instruction, are formed as citizens capable of interacting in the midst of diversity and respect for their dignity and the dignity of others. This school coexistence, mediated by a contract called coexistence manual, is influenced by legislation and jurisprudence that regulate the fundamental rights of citizens. But the adaptation of these legal impositions and guidelines has represented a great challenge for educational establishments to the extent that their adoption and implementation requires a change of cultural and political perspective in each of the members of the educational community, especially in teachers, teachers and even parents.
In the case of the General Santander Educational Institution, despite the fact that legal considerations on school coexistence have been incorporated as a legal framework and conceptual reference in the coexistence manual, and that in a large part of the document old practices that appeared contrary to the new contexts are redefined, in some aspects there is a lack of a true interpretation that fully and effectively recognizes guarantees and rights applicable to various situations of school coexistence.
In the verification of this legal context in the coexistence manual of the General Santander Educational Institution, the methodology of analysis and description is used in the documentary inquiry with the objective of determining what has been taken into account and what has not of the important normative development and jurisprudence that, on school coexistence, have been developed by legislators and high courts in Colombia

Esta convivencia escolar, mediada por un contrato llamado manual de convivencia, recibe el influjo de la legislación y la jurisprudencia que regulan los derechos fundamentales de los ciudadanos. Pero la adecuación de estas imposiciones y orientaciones jurídicas han representado un gran reto para los establecimientos educativos en la medida en que su adopción y su implementación requiere de cambio de perspectiva cultural y política en cada uno de los miembros de la comunidad educativa, especialmente en directivos docentes, docentes e, incluso, padres de familia. En el caso de la Institución Educativa General Santander, a pesar de que las consideraciones jurídicas sobre la convivencia escolar han sido incorporadas como marco normativo y referente conceptual en su manual de convivencia, y que en gran parte del documento se resignifican prácticas antiguas que aparecían en contravía de los nuevos contextos, en algunos aspectos se evidencia la falta de una correcta interpretación que reconozca plena y eficazmente garantías y derechos aplicables a diversas situaciones de la convivencia en este entorno.
