Summary: The General Archive Law represents a strategic nodule for the guarantee of access to public information rights and assumes substantial challenges towards the management of state documentary heritage and private archives of public interest. Its commencement, since June 15, 2019, intersects with other legislative reforms that aim to accomplish an adequate governmental management, such as the national system for transparency, access to public information and protection of personal data, as well as the national anti-corruption system. In this context, it is imperative to analyze and discuss the implications of the General Archive Law for the affirmation of the access to public information right, given that archives are the support, precedent and repository that guarantees such right.
