In the past few years, there have been views developing on the problem of lack of access to
portable water and sanitation from which millions of people have suffered in the world from a human
rights perspective, culminating in the recognition of the right to water and sanitation by the General
Assembly and the Human rights Council in 2010 within the international arena. In this paper we shall
examine the role of the work of the Independent Expert on the issue of human rights obligations related to
access to safe drinking water and sanitation, commissioned in 2008, and whose mandate has been
renewed in 2011 as Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation has had
in the development of this right. |
