For the corresponding effects were studied followed by referendum, popular initiative, the referendum and the referendum at the municipal level, the council and the plebiscite, to fi nally make a brief statement of other participatory mechanisms present in our legal system.La participación de los ciudadanos en el marco de una sociedad democrática debe hacerse bajo el imperio del Derecho. En un sentido amplio, la participación comprende las acciones colectivas o individuales de apoyo o de presión, mediante las cuales una o varias personas intentan incidir en las decisiones acerca del tipo de gobierno que debe regir una sociedad, en la manera cómo se dirige el Estado en dicho país, o en decisiones específi cas del Gobierno que afectan a una comunidad o a sus miembros. En el caso de Costa Rica, la mayoría de las instancias de participación ciudadana en la formulación, ejecución y evaluación de políticas públicas es de reciente creación. Para los efectos correspondientes, de seguido se estudiarán el referéndum, la iniciativa popular, el plebiscito, y en el ámbito municipal el referendo, el cabildo y el plebiscito, para fi nalmente hacer un breve enunciado de otros mecanismos de participación presentes en nuestro ordenamiento jurídico.Universidad de Costa Rica.
