Summary: The participation of citizens within a democratic society should be under the rule of law. Participation includes class actions and individual support or pressure, whereby one or more people try to infl uence decisions about the type of government that must govern a society. In the case of Costa Rica, most instances of participation are a recent development. For the corresponding effects were studied followed by referendum, popular initiative, the referendum and the referendum at the municipal level, the council and the plebiscite, to fi nally make a brief statement of other participatory mechanisms present in our legal system.
