Summary: Security and crime prevention in rural areas has been a subject little studied in our country. The lack of crime data and an image of governments and citizens as safe and crime-free areas could have been the main cause of the lack of interest on the part of the criminological community during all these years. The main objective of this work is to analyze one of the main problems in the security of rural areas: the geographical element. Specifically, this study has been carried out in a region where the number of rural populations exceeds 90 percent and 80 percent of its population resides in these areas. The methodological tool used for this research has been geographic information systems, a method that is increasingly used in disciplines such as Criminology. The results show some of the problems that the existing distances between rural communities in the north of the autonomous community of Extremadura can cause for security management or crime prevention.
