Summary: The purpose of this work is to study the role of empathy in Marshall Berman’s political theory, specifically, in his book On the town. For that purpose, this article begins with an analysis of the necessary role of emotions in democratic political theory. Next, it goes through some of the different conceptions of empathy, particularly Martha Nussbaum’s view of empathy. Finally, the article examines the relationship between public space, identity and empathy in On the town in order to show its important contribution to think about the challenges of democracy today.
