Laburpena: One of the most enigmatic metaphors within the work of the Rhine mystic Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) is that of the “divine spark” or “spark of the soul” which appears recurrently and under different meanings in the German texts written by the prior of Erfurt. Our main focus in this research is the analysis of this igneous symbol that the Dominican priest identifies with “the highest reason”, “an enlightened understanding” which he describes as free of all names and bare of all forms. We begin our journey with the study of the symbolic value of the fire metaphor in some chapters of the Bible, and then move on to the interpretation of this image by authors such as St. Jerome in his commentary on the biblical passage of Ezekiel, or St. Thomas Aquinas in his Quaestiones disputatae de veritate, finally proceeding to unravel the multiple allusions to the term in Eckhart’s theological corpus.
