Summary: The access to information has an instrumental value to promote the exercise of other human rights, such as the right to a healthy environment; it is also a tool that encourages citizen involvement and the ability to watch over governmental actions in order to pursue accountability. This article presents an overview of the content and legal development of the right of access to information and environmental rights. Afterwards, it analyzes the relationship between these two human rights as it highlights the importance for society to know about environmental information. For these ends, the article analyzes case studies that allow us to notice the public interest and the usefulness of this right to let people know any information that may have an impact on their environment, to protect their welfare and to improve their life quality.
