Summary: Suicide as a historiographic object has been approached in association with different perspectives: in relation to insanity and medicalization, with criminality (mainly with statistics), with the administration of justice, in its legal-religious senses. This paper reviews some productions on the subject, mainly coming from the Chilean and Mexican historiography, to examine what kind of questions the historians ask about this phenomenon, and what conclusions they obtain according to the sources they interrogate. How do the results of such research contribute to a history of justice? This is the central purpose, which tries a kind of confrontation between those who explore suicide from causal explanations –a phenomenon that aroused fears when it reached characteristics of "epidemic"–and those who review it by exploring profiles and experiences of these violent judicialkillings such as suicides.
