Summary: This article briefly reviews the profiles of the theoretical debate on the effects of the Guaranteed Minimum Wage (GMS) on employment and other macroeconomic variables to be introduced into the empirical literature carried out for this purpose. Empirical studies have been characterized more by their ambiguity than by yielding conclusive results that are consistent with predictions made from conventional economic theory. Unsurprisingly, it is not surprising, that various labour policies are now shifting the focus of their attention to increasing GMS in order to reduce growing income distribution inequalities and, in turn, reduce the poverty levels achieved. This is what has happened in Spain recently. Royal Decree 1462/2018 has legislated an increase in the GMS of 22 per cent. This article makes a number of reflections on this measure and its possible economic and economic effects, in the heat of the theoretical and empirical reflections presented in the preceding paragraphs.
