Summary: Democracy in Costa Rica still holds important support reserves. However, it is evident that the main institutions of political representation of the country have experienced a considerable loss of trust or legitimacy and also in the levels of political tolerance. There is a mismatch between the Costa Rica of accelerated social changes and the political Costa Rica clung to representation schemes that are questioned and surpassed by these changes. This situation clearly encompasses challenges to overcome in order to constitute a reformulated political representation, inclusive, participating, (characteristic not contradictory to representation) and plural, in light of a society which is very different from the past and which demands a democracy based on the deliberation and permanent exercise of the citizenry. There ought to be reforms to the regime, the electoral system, and the parties. The sustainability of a stronger democracy (more and better) implies a culture of broad understanding and programmatic agreements that facilitate constitutional, respectful and tolerant living
