Taking into account the characteristics it acquired during the private management, the main objective of this work is to find continuities and ruptures in its operation and the state regulation between that period and the one of the renationalization. Basically, we consider the role of the state in the whole process. The analysis relies on the combination of different sources: official documents, legislation and statistics, companies´ balance sheets and reports, newspaper articles and semi-structured interviews.A casi dos décadas de la concesión del servicio de agua potable y saneamiento en el Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, este artículo reconstruye el derrotero de esta prestación que fue reestatizada en 2006. A partir de considerar las características que adquirió el servicio durante la gestión privada, interesa identificar las continuidades y rupturas que, en materia de operatoria y regulación, se plantean respecto de la empresa estatal, Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos S.A. (AySA). Fundamentalmente se considera el rol desempeñado por el Estado en todo el proceso.
