The article illustrates the change in mentality that is occurring in Italy, both from the point of view of recognition of new powers for the victim and from the point of view of the visual angle of his/her protection from the effects of secondary victimisation typical of the penal system. In this area, the author attaches particular signifi cance to the forces coming from the comparison with other systems, to the effects of the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and the obligations deriving from the regulatory deeds of the European Union. In the fi nal part of the work, the risk that this new attention for the victim may cause negative repercussions for protecting the fundamental guarantees of the defendant is discussed.El papel de la víctima en el sistema procesal italiano se presenta históricamente como algo marginal y en la mayoría de los casos relacionado con el resarcimiento del daño que dicho sujeto puede demandar por medio del ejercicio de la acción civil en el juicio penal. El artículo expone el cambio de mentalidad que se está manifestando en Italia, tanto bajo el perfi l del reconocimiento de inéditos poderes de impulso a la víctima, como desde el punto de vista de su protección contra los efectos de victimización secundaria, típicos del rito penal. En este marco, el autor asigna un particular relieve a los estímulos procedentes de la comparación con otros sistemas, a los efectos de la jurisprudencia de la Corte CEDU y a las obligaciones derivadas de los actos normativos de la Unión Europea.
