Summary: When analyzing the determinants of innovation, innovation systems approach has many advantages. Owing to the fact that it has been evolved from the reality of developed countries, economies such as Mexico needs to carry out studies to adapt the innovation system approach to the local particularities in developing countries. This article presents some results of a study on the innovation system in San Luis Potosi (Mexico). In particular, after a short introduction to the theories of innovation, some results of the innovation survey and the identifi cation of the institutional profi le of the innovation system of San Luis Potosi are presented. Next, a model for development of innovations in Mexican industry is proposed. Following, general recommendations to boost innovation are depicted. The text ends highlighting the fact that the innovation at the fi rm level is mainly carried out from own resources and without collaboration.
