Throughout the analysis of a specific case � the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission� I discuss the possibilities of scientific knowledge to produce a more complete understanding of �the violence� and the need to question certain interpretative assumptions regarding the political agency of certain populations, in this case, of the Andean rural communities.Neste texto são analisadas as Comissões de Verdade como mecanismos políticos, partindo de uma dupla perspectiva: por um lado, os testemunhos como elemento central que outorga legitimidade ético-política às comissões pelo seu papel na determinação das violações dos direitos humanos; por outro, o trabalho dos profissionais do direito e das ciências sociais como peritos que trazem legitimidade científica a esses processos e que são também testemunhas privilegiadas da produção da verdade.
