Summary: Veracity has been catalogued as a principle of vital importance for industrial property. Geographical indications and appellations of origin are two issues deeply developed by in Spanish and French legislations; in South America, Decision 486 of the Andean Nations Community gives an innovative treatment to these topics. This paper studies appellations of origin and geographic indications under the perspective of the principle of veracity, which we consider very important to producers regarding their duty to comply with the quality of the products, specific information about its origin and quality due to this origin.
