Summary: This paper intends to analyze the importance that the tools of economics can play in the development of the effectiveness of collective litigation, especially in the protection of consumer relationships. In this sense, it is presented firstly the approximation that has been occurring on the last decades between Economics and Law, expressed mainly on the ideas of the New Institutional Economics and the Economic Analysis of Law. After that, we focus on the collective litigation, observing its legal regulation and the substantial interests that it shall protect, and approaching to Consumer Law, a field we identify as related to the economic development. By linking the data, we conclude that mainly on this field and due to the large impacts of the collective adjudication, the contribution of Economics is necessary to the jurist, since not always the legal application will represent the best protection mechanism.
