The tale was published post mortem, with the first edition released in 1969. Years after his experience in Germany, the author leads the reader to the heart of a traumatic memory: an encounter with death. Yes, an encounter with death. Not final death equestrian, Grim Reaper, skinny and so unsettling, but the other one, that one. Death in the tale appears as psychological suffering (pathos) intensely experienced through soroche altitude sickness due to the thin air at high altitudes, but also through the deep depression experienced upon that period of thriving authoritarianism (ethos) in wartime Germany, expressed in countless genocidal killings. The approach proposes an intertwining of history, political culture and the clinical method. ER -
