The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of vineyards in the formation and consolidation of the rural population during the late Middle Ages. These vineyards were small properties whose numbers increased steadily during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. They constituted the basis of the economy of the majority of the rural population and, in a world increasingly dominated by large estates dedicated to the production of grain, olive groves and stockbreeding, they played an important social role among the rural population.
