Summary: This article resumes the academic debate generated immediately after the 2001 crisis in Argentina on the causes that triggered it. What was actually under debate was the IMFs capacity to intervene in developing countries, and, ultimately, neoliberalism itself as a model for economic and social development. The work primarily synthesises the main features of the fiscalist explanation given by the fund and also analyses those of the heterodox critiques of the explanation. Distinct responsibility for what happened emerges from both visions, as do, more importantly, different solutions for tackling the situation. It was precisely these differences and their implications for ex post 2001 political practice which resulted in creating tension between the national authorities and those of the IMF; a tension which persists today.
