Summary: |
In order to examine and to verify if the factors
of the present occupational risk in the hospital infirmary
work, operate on the appearance of the low back pain,
a prevalence study was done in a sample of 302
workers from the infirmary of two hospitals in
Venezuela.
In a questionnaire on menstrual troubles and other
peri-menstrual symptoms, Two specific questions
concerning low back pain were performed, based
perception of the workers pain: (1) Today, at the time
of this interview do feel pain at the level of your low
back? (yes/no). (2) During last the 12 months, with what
frequency have you experienced pain at the level of
your low back? (never, sometimes, frequently and/or
almost always). Different patient manipulations and
intensity of work indicators were examined as
occupational risk factors. The low back pain association
with each one of the occupational factors was analyzed
through the multiple logistic regression model, adjusted
by age, obesity, alcohol consumption, cigarette, and
menstruation.
The low back pain prevalence at the interview
moment was 28% and the prevalence of this perceived
symptom, frequently or almost all the time, during the
last year was 48%. Associations statistically significant,
with low back pain and different tasks that imply
uncomfortable positions of the trunk and the raise of
loads, were encountered. e.i. To Bathe patients,
ORaj=1.09(IC 95%=1.01-1.16), so as with various
indicator of intensity of work rate, i.e: Perception of
the intense work rate, ORaj=1.58(IC 95%=1.24-2.02). Among the non occupational factors the menstruation
and the cigarette were statistically associated: Menstruation, RR=1.96(IC 95% =1.31-2.92); cigarette
consumption, RR=1.68(IC 95%=1.16-2.43).
Our results suggest menstruation is an important
predisposing factor for the low back pain appearence
on infirmary workers, increasing inclusive twice the
risk of suffering such symptom. Nevertheless, the
occupational risk factors are still being determining for
the low back pain in the group of the infirmary workers |
